Windshield Installation & Care Instructions updated: July 2010
Installation:
Read This Before Starting Installation - All Models
Caution: Read the instructions below before removal and/or installation of the new Windshield. Improper installation may cause the windshield to become loose and could cause injury to the motorcycle operator or passenger. Fast Aire Performance Products is not liable or responsible for any injury or damage to the motorcycle or to the motorcycle operator or passenger due to improper or incorrect installation of the windshield or failure of the installer to follow the installation instructions.
For: Harley Davidson 1996 – 2011 FLHT, FLHTC, FLHTCU & FLHX Series
Removing the old windshield
Before you start, look at the fit of the windshield into the Fairing…no large gaps !
Step 1 Place the Motorcycle on level ground and resting securely on the kickstand or side stand/support.
Step 2 Looking from the Motorcycle Front, locate the three (3) screws holding the Windshield in the Fairing
Step 3 With the proper driver, loosen these three (3) screws ½ way out.
Step 4 From the Inner Fairing side, locate the two (2) screws outside of and close to the speaker holes, they are recessed.
Step 5 With the proper driver, loosen these two (2) screws 2-3 turns outward. Do not remove these screws.
Step 6 From the Fairing Front, grasp the current Windshield on both outside edges, wiggle it and gently pull upward.
If it does not come out freely, remove the three windshield screws and try it again.
Installing the Fast Aire Windshield … Wash your hands ! … Dirty Hands can scratch the new windshield.
Note: The windshield will install easier if it is pre-warmed to room temperature ( 70 – 80 degrees F )
Step 1 Peeling from the edge; remove the protective covering from the both sides of the new windshield and inspect it now.
Step 2 Holding the new windshield by both edges and gently bend the windshield to fit the contour of the fairing opening.
Step 3 Gently push the windshield into the fairing opening until it stops. There should be no cutouts visible above the Fairing.
Step 4 Check the alignment of the outside windshield edges to the Fairing. It’s common to have a minor misalignment here.
Step 5 If all looks good, slightly tighten or reinstall the three (3) windshield screws. Do not fully tighten the screws at this time.
Step 6 Tighten the two(2) screws in the Inner Fairing. Do not over tighten or you may strip the brass nuts inside the Fairing.
Step 7 Now, visually check the new windshield alignment & tighten the center screw first, then the outside screws.
The new windshield should fit between the Inner & Outer fairing with no large gaps between them. If you see a large gap that means the windshield is not correctly positioned. Loosen the three (3) Outer Fairing screws & realign the windshield. If you have loosened the two Inner Fairing Screws,tighten them now. Refer to the applicable Service Manual for applicable screw torque requirements.
Now…step back and admire how nice your new Fast Aire Windshield looks on your motorcycle…. Looks great doesn't it !

Step 3 With the proper driver, remove these five (5) nuts & washers and remove the bolts.
Step 4 On the Left & Right and inside of the Fairing, locate the two (2) nuts & bolts that hold the OEM windshield on
Step 5 If the two inside bolts are still used: With the proper driver, remove these two (2) nuts & bolts completely.
These two bolts will not be used to install the new shield.
Step 6 From the Fairing Front, grasp the current Windshield on both outside edges, and gently pull upward. You may need
to move the windshield left or right or gently pry open the upper Fairing halves to remove it.

Step 1 Peeling from the bottom edge; remove the protective covering from the both sides of the new windshield.
Step 2 Holding the new windshield by both edges, gently bend the windshield to fit the contour of the Fairing opening.
Step 3 Visually align the center Fairing hole to the center slot in the windshield and gently push it into the fairing gap.
Step 4 Check the alignment of the outside windshield edges to the Fairing. It’s common to have a minor misalignment here.
Note: On some models, the Inner Fairing and Outer Fairing does not perfectly align and a gap maybe present.
Step 5 If all looks good, reinstall the five (5) windshield Bolts & nuts. Do not fully tighten them at this time.
Step 6 Re-check the windshield alignment and adjust it as needed. … then tighten the five (5) Bolts & Nuts.
Note: Do not over tighten these Bolts & Nuts or you could crack the Fairing halves or the windshield.
Refer to the applicable Service Manual for any torque requirements. Step 7 Now, visually check the new windshield alignment. The windshield should be even on both sides and should fit
between the Inner & Outer fairing.
Taking Care of the Windshield
The Fast Aire Windshield is made from a high quality plastic material. It is scratch resistant and impact resistant…but it is not scratch proof or unbreakable. It is a plastic material so it can be scratched, damaged and/or broken. Road debris like sand, rocks, bugs, falling tree branches, birds and whatever you can find out there will scratch and possibly break the windshield. These conditions are considered normal road hazards and there is nothing anyone can do to prevent this.
Cleaning:
Never …wipe off the windshield surface with a your hand, dry rag or paper towel, this will scratch it.

- A small amount of liquid dish soap mixed with water into a one-quart spray bottle for removing road grime.
- Spray the windshield lightly to allow the soap mixture to soften the grime.
- Pre-wet a soft clean cloth and gently remove the soap mixture and road grime and allow it to air dry. Repeat if necessary.
- Finish with clear water on a soft clean cotton cloth to remove any remaining cleaning mixture.
- When on the road and need to clean the windshield, soak a towel in water and lay the towel on the windshield. This will
soften the road grime. Use another wet towel and gently wipe the surface to remove the grime and allow it to air dry.
- Spray the windshield lightly to allow the soap mixture to soften the grime.
- Pre-wet a soft clean cloth and gently remove the soap mixture and road grime and allow it to air dry. Repeat if necessary.
- Finish with clear water on a soft clean cotton cloth to remove any remaining cleaning mixture.
- When on the road and need to clean the windshield, soak a towel in water and lay the towel on the windshield. This will
soften the road grime. Use another wet towel and gently wipe the surface to remove the grime and allow it to air dry.
Do not use: Windex, 409, Comet, Soft Scrub, Rain-X, gasoline, tar remover, paint thinner, grease remover or any of the other household cleaners/solvents that you might find to clean a plastic windshield. Some of this stuff contains acid and will discolor and/or damage your new windshield.
Rain-X: People always ask is it's OK to use Rain-X on a plastic windshield. Rain-X is design for glass. Unless your motorcycle windshield company specifically states that its OK to use Rain-X on their product, then the answer is No. Do not use Rain-X on a Fast Aire windshield.
Scratches:
The windshield is made of plastic...Due to road debris and riding miles, grime will collect on the windshield and eventually the windshield will get scratched…"it's gonna happen". We recommend that when this happens, you clean the shield with soap and water then use a quality plastic polish to clean the windshield. Nothing will restore the windshield back to perfection but it will greatly reduce the major scratches. Different companies like HD, Novis, 3M , Plexus and others make a quality plastic cleaner / polish. Pick the one you like the most... Use at your own risk.

A Dark Grey or Black color windshield will show scratches easier than a clear or light colored windshield.
Tips:
We have discovered that Mothers Gold Auto Wax for Clear Coat Paint, does a fine job at polishing the windshield and hiding the fine scratches. Other brands of high quality auto wax may work as well.

We do not suggest that you use any "cleaner wax" designed for badly oxidized paint, a cleaner wax may be too abrasive for the windshield... Use at your own risk.
In a pinch, household spray wax like Pledge works good at covering up scratches
Armor-All takes work but it can produce a nice shine
1 oz of a liquid dish soap in a 16 oz spray bottle works well for road grim & bug goodies
Old but clean 100% white cotton shirts or diapers work better than synthetic cloths because they do not leave static behind
Micro-fiber cloths work very well but tend to leave a static charge behind.
